  • 3-year Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a government-recognised institute
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an Indian university
  • AMIE (Section A & B), India

If you claim an equivalent qualification, you must produce an Equivalence Certificate when the Board asks. Any other qualification will be rejected at any stage. Your qualification must be complete on or before the cut-off date.

Application Fee

  • General candidates: ₹600
  • SC, ST-1, ST-2, EWS and PwBD: ₹500

Payment is online only (net banking, credit or debit card). The fee is non-refundable and cannot be adjusted against any other exam. Applications without the fee are rejected. For excess-payment disputes, the Board accepts requests only through its official grievance email, and no chargeback requests are entertained.

Selection Process

  1. Written/OMR examination: Objective multiple-choice questions, in English only, with negative marking of one-fourth of the marks for each wrong answer.
  2. Document Verification (DV): For shortlisted candidates, with original documents.

There is no interview. Selection is on the basis of merit in the written exam only. Candidature stays provisional until your documents are verified, and getting a roll number or admit card does not guarantee you a place in later stages.

Reservation Rules

Category certificates: Reserved-category candidates must upload a valid certificate in the prescribed format, valid as on the cut-off date, while applying. No further chance to upload will be given. Certificates in any other format are rejected, and a fake or forged certificate leads to debarment and penal action. If you cannot produce a valid certificate at DV, you will be considered under Open Merit.

Horizontal reservation: This cuts across vertical categories, and selected candidates are placed in the appropriate category by adjustment. It applies to Ex-Servicemen (ESM) and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) to the extent communicated by the department.

ESM candidates:

  • Must produce a Form XIV certificate, signed by the competent authority, under Rule 18 of the J&K Reservation Rules, 2005
  • Must submit an affidavit sworn before a 1st Class Judicial Magistrate at document scrutiny
  • Under S.O. 361 of 2021, an ex-serviceman who has already used this benefit to join a post cannot use it again for any later employment
  • If enough ESM candidates are not available on the general standard, they may be selected under a relaxed standard to fill the reserved quota

Facilities for PwBD Candidates

Eligible PwBD candidates with a valid disability certificate can get a scribe and/or 20 minutes of compensatory time per hour of examination.

Scribe conditions:

  • You must arrange your own scribe
  • The scribe must not be a candidate for the same exam
  • The scribe must not be a relative or a student of the same centre
  • The scribe's qualification must be lower than yours and not above the minimum required for the post
  • The scribe must carry a valid original photo ID
  • If a candidate is found acting as a scribe for another PwBD candidate, both candidatures are cancelled

Documents to submit to the Observer on exam day:

  • Application on plain paper
  • Self-attested disability certificate
  • Certificate of physical limitation to write (Annexure-B), from a government healthcare institution and given by a specialist of the relevant stream
  • Undertaking for using own scribe (Annexure-C)
  • Admit card and contact number
  • Scribe's self-attested qualification certificate
  • Photocopy of the scribe's photo ID, signed by both the candidate and the scribe

You must have applied as a PwBD candidate in the online form to avail these facilities. Reach the centre at least one hour early.

How to Apply

  1. Visit jkssb.nic.in and open the online application portal once applications begin.
  2. Enter your name, date of birth, father's name and mother's name exactly as in your Matriculation Certificate.
  3. Select Item No. 265, Junior Engineer (Mechanical).

  5. Pay the fee online.
  6. Review the form carefully and submit. No corrections are allowed after submission.
  7. Print the application form and keep it for Document Verification. Do not send hard copies to the Board.

  • In-service candidates must submit the printout with a duly signed and stamped certificate through their Head of Department, who must forward it to the Board by the last date of Document Verification. Mention this in the online form.

  • Matriculation Certificate
  • Educational/technical qualification certificates (valid on or before 15.12.2026)
  • Domicile Certificate in the prescribed format, valid up to the cut-off date
  • Category certificate, if applicable
  • Form XIV and affidavit, for ESM candidates
  • Bonafide Certificate on the Board's format, if your degree is from a university or college outside J&K (other than Central Universities)

  • Two recent passport-size colour photographs (not older than 6 months, with date)
  • Valid original photo ID

No TA/DA is paid for the written test or DV. If you fail to appear or produce originals, you will not be considered for selection. If any claim in your application is found false, your candidature is cancelled and criminal proceedings may follow.

Exam Day Rules

  • Carry a printout of your admit card, two recent passport-size photographs (not older than 6 months, with date) and an original photo ID (Aadhaar or e-Aadhaar printout, voter ID, driving licence, PAN, passport, or school/college/university/employer ID).
  • Admit cards can be downloaded from the website about one week before the exam. They are not sent by post.
  • Mobile phones, smart watches, smart glasses, AI-enabled devices, Bluetooth devices, cameras and storage media are strictly prohibited, even if switched off.
  • Avoid bringing bags and valuables, as no safe-keeping is arranged.
  • Expect security screening, including frisking, metal detectors, biometric capture, facial recognition and Aadhaar authentication.
  • Misconduct or defying exam staff can lead to cancellation and a ban from future exams.

PYQs and Exam Preparation

The syllabus and exam pattern details (total marks, duration and section-wise split) have not been notified yet, so watch jkssb.nic.in. Until then, here is how to start.

Why PYQs matter: With negative marking and merit-only selection, PYQs help you learn the difficulty level, the repeated topics and how to manage time.

Where to find PYQs:

  • The JKSSB website and past exam notices for previous Junior Engineer papers
  • Previous papers of other JE Mechanical exams in the same style, such as SSC JE and other state engineering recruitments, which are useful for practising the core subjects

Core subjects to prioritise:

  • Thermodynamics
  • Strength of Materials
  • Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machines
  • Theory of Machines
  • Machine Design
  • Manufacturing Processes and Production
  • Heat Transfer, and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
  • Engineering Mechanics and Industrial Engineering
  • General awareness and J&K-specific topics, if included in the syllabus

Preparation strategy:

  1. Solve at least the last 5 years of papers, topic by topic, and note the high-frequency chapters.
  2. Make short formula notes for quick revision.
  3. Take timed mock tests to build speed.
  4. Because of ¼ negative marking, attempt only questions where you can eliminate at least two options.
  5. Revise your weak topics weekly.
  6. Once the syllabus is out, align your plan with it right away.

Tips for Applicants

  • Apply early, because the portal often slows down near the deadline.
  • Keep your Domicile and category certificates valid as on 15 December 2026.
  • Match your name and date of birth with your Matriculation Certificate.
  • Keep scanned documents ready in the required size before the portal opens.
  • Check jkssb.nic.in regularly, as exam updates are posted only on the website.
