Device Drivers, Utilities and Firmware
Device drivers
A device driver is system software that acts as a translator between the operating system and a hardware device.
What happens when you click Print: application → OS → printer driver → printer. The driver turns the OS command into signals the hardware understands, and the reply travels back the same way to the OS and the user.
| Type | Runs | Access | If it fails | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kernel-mode driver | Inside the kernel | Full | May crash the system (blue screen) | BIOS and firmware, chipset, CPU, storage controller, graphics card |
| User-mode driver | Outside the kernel | Limited | Only that device stops | Printer, scanner, webcam, USB devices, speakers |
Utility software
| Utility | Function | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Antivirus | Detects and removes malware | Norton, McAfee, Avast, Windows Defender |
| Disk cleaner | Deletes useless files to free space | CCleaner, Disk Cleanup |
| Backup and recovery | Copies data and restores it after a loss | Acronis, Windows Backup, Time Machine |
| System optimiser | Tunes settings and resources | Advanced SystemCare |
| Disk defragmenter | Rearranges file pieces for faster access (useful for HDD, not SSD) | Windows Defragment tool |
| File compression | Shrinks files to save space and speed transfer | WinRAR, 7-Zip, WinZip |
| Disk encryption | Locks the disk against unauthorised access | BitLocker, VeraCrypt, FileVault |
Firmware
Firmware is software stored permanently in non-volatile memory (ROM, EEPROM or flash) inside a device. It gives the hardware its basic start-up and control instructions, and changes only through special tools or official updates.
| Device | Firmware | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Motherboard | BIOS or UEFI | Starts the hardware, runs POST, loads the OS |
| Router | Router firmware | Routing, Wi-Fi and security settings |
| Smart TV | TV firmware | Display and app control |
| Printer | Printer firmware | Print-head movement and ink control |
| Mobile phone | Baseband firmware | Radio and cellular communication |
