Origin of Jammu and the Early Rulers
The founding legend
- By the most accepted popular legend, Raja Jambu Lochan founded Jammu (the exam notes give the 14th century BCE).
- Once he crossed the Tawi river and saw a goat and a lion drinking water at the same place. Struck by this harmony, he set up a town named after himself, Jambu Nagar, later Jammu.
Prominent early rulers
| Ruler | Notes |
|---|---|
| Bahu Lochan | Credited with building the Bahu Fort on the Tawi. Founded the new city of Dharanagri and moved his capital there. |
| Jambu Lochan | Brother of Bahu Lochan; the exam notes say he ruled in 2500 BCE. |
| Puran Karan | The only son of Jambu Lochan. |
| Shakti Karan (Raja Shastri) | Introduced the Dogri script. |
- This line ended in the reign of Raja Shiv Prakash, who was defeated by Raja Shalya of Sialkot (identified as maternal uncle of the Pandavas). After Shalya's death the Pandavas annexed Jammu. Arjuna's son Babruvahana then founded Babbapura, modern Babore.
