Statehood: The Road Ahead
- Legal route: Parliament can restore statehood by an ordinary law under Articles 3 and 4, as it did for Himachal Pradesh (1971), Goa, Arunachal and Mizoram (1987).
- Promises: the Centre has repeatedly said statehood will be restored at an "appropriate time"; the Solicitor General told the Supreme Court in 2023 it would be.
- Court: the 2023 verdict asked for restoration "as soon as possible". In October 2025 the Court asked the Centre to reply to pleas seeking a timeline (Zahoor Ahmad Bhat v. Union of India).
- Politics: The Assembly passed a statehood resolution on 28 September 2026, with the BJP protesting. A Union Minister said on 11 October 2026 that statehood "may be restored soon".
